Human Connections Group has partnered exclusively with Breen Construction for the appointment of an experienced Quantity Surveyor based at Head Office in Alexandra, Central Otago.

The Company

Breen Construction Ltd operate throughout the lower South Island with offices in Oamaru, Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra. The business has been privately owned and operated for over 75 years by the Breen family with family members still working hands-on within the operation.

This business has developed from grassroots into an established, reputable and well-known operation with over 140 staff located across Otago. The operational hub of the business is in Alexandra, this is where functions such as administration, finance and health and safety are located as well as the base for the Estimating/Quantity Surveying team who support all locations. 

The Quantity Surveying team is managed by Peter Breen, a collaborative and supportive manager who is heavily involved with the QS team and is still on the tools on a day to day basis.

Currently there are 5 people in the QS team and we expect this to grow to meet business demands over the next 18 - 24 months with a myriad of projects in the pipeline. As a result there are plenty of opportunities for progression for those who are career focused and for those who are looking simply for a secure environment to work in, this is it.

The Job

Quantity Surveyors are responsible for preparing cost estimates and construction offers as well as managing construction costs and administering contracts for all levels and types of projects.

This role reports directly into the Chief Estimator but includes reporting to the Commercial Manager, Area Manager and the Managing Director so the ability to communicate at all levels with ease is critical.

Duties and Responsibilities;

? A safety first approach to work
? A focus on quality at all times
? Ability to undertake feasibility studies and input in decisions regarding project feasibility
? Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, subcontractors and suppliers 
? Ability to carefully analyse project drawings and specifications
? Confidently prepare an accurate schedule of quantities required for construction 
? Manage design changes and alterations and the effect on the cost of construction
? Assist with ordering of components required for construction 
? Manage and setup of relevant subcontractors required for construction 
? Manage payment schedules for subcontractors and suppliers 
? Debrief the project team on all pricing and any alterations and handover
? Prepare regular job performance summaries for internal and external review
? Visit sites and clients to update on progress and discuss any variations and associated costs

Skills Required:

? Minimum of 3 - 5 years experience in estimating or Quantity surveying 
? Experience using Microsoft excel/word, COSTX measuring and estimating software (preferable), accounting packages (COSTCON or similar)
? Logical thinking and analytical skills
? Good written and verbal communication skills 
? Good problem solving skills 
? Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously
? Good computer skills 
? Ability to build relationships both internally and externally with suppliers, subcontractors and clients alike
