The national School of Nursing, Massey University, is focused on leading the future of mental health nursing in New Zealand. The School is seeking a future orientated, service user focused full- or part-time lecturer with experience in mental health nursing to be based on the Wellington campus. A newly developed and innovative curriculum has been designed to provide education at undergraduate level which is integrated into postgraduate level study which prepares nurses to lead person-centred and future orientated care across all areas of service delivery. The School is seeking a future orientated, service user focused full- or part-time lecturer with experience in mental health nursing to be based on the Wellington campus. In the position you will actively contribute to the on-going development of nursing education within the university setting including the implementation of innovative teaching practices such as the development of the digital learning environment.

Ideally you will have a completed Masters in Nursing or a related discipline, although preference may be given to a Registered Nurse with, or studying towards, a PhD in nursing or an associated discipline. You will be registered or be eligible for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and hold/obtain a current Annual Practising Certificate. Purpose statement

The purpose of this position is to facilitate leading edge education and clinical practice with a focus on mental health, within postgraduate and undergraduate programmes and to undertake research to contribute to the scholarly outputs to transform the future of mental health service delivery. This is to be achieved by undertaking an effective programme of teaching, research and publication in mental health; undertaking post-graduate research supervision, and by providing administrative and professional service to the university and to broader academic, professional and general communities both nationally and internationally.

Key accountabilities

Participate individually or as a member of a research team in the planning and carrying out of research projects in an area of health and/or nursing based on expertise and interest. 
Publish regularly in nursing or related journals, either as sole or co-author, to meet new Zealand research contribution requirements. 
Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences in area of research focus.
Supervise and examine reports and theses in areas consistent with expertise.
Actively contribute critically to the ongoing development of a strong research culture in nursing and the wider university community with a particular focus on issues on better outcomes for all New Zealanders. 
Contribute to the wider health research environment by undertaking activities such as reviewing for scholarly journals and contributing to research related development.
Actively maintain research related work and engagement records and profile online as required by the university.

Teaching / Supervision:
Coordinate and teach in postgraduate and undergraduate nursing courses based on individual area of expertise, as required by the Head of School and Directors of Nursing programmes.
Be part of a team to design and maintain study materials that can transform the programme for internal/blended/online delivery.
Contribute to ongoing curriculum reviews and development of the postgraduate and undergraduate nursing programmes and courses.
Ensure all teaching is informed by research, and delivered in an appropriate manner to enhance student learning.
Supervise teaching and marking undertaken by senior tutors, assistant lecturers or external personnel.
Complete student evaluation processes as required by the University and School.
Develop and maintain teaching expertise through engagement in a range of professional development opportunities both internal and external.
Develop relationships with stakeholders so that they engage with the School first about development of the mental health nursing workforce to meet future of mental health service needs.
Actively maintain professional relationships with students, the teaching team and relevant stakeholders.

Professional Service:
Develop strategic external relationships which support the nursing programmes in areas of expertise.
Participate in the ongoing development of nursing as a profession, both in- and outside the University.
Contribute in field(s) of expertise to the development of health care and service delivery in New Zealand.
Engage internationally with colleagues for professional development and research purposes.

University Responsibilities / Administration:
Ensure all practice, teaching, research and other professional activities are conducted within the law and conform to professional ethical requirements.
Promote the reputation of the School and the University by adhering to agreed standards and policies designed to maintain national and international standards of professional practice.
Ensure all teaching of Nursing and Nursing-related subjects comply with the relevant requirements of the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
Contribute to the wider University community through active engagement in relevant committees and events.
Undertake administrative responsibilities at School, College and/or University level as requested or approved by the Head of School.
Contribute to the development of a School working environment of teamwork and cooperation.
Ensure the observance of University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices.

Person specification


Registered Nurse with a current annual practising certificate.
Preferably a completed PhD, however PhD candidature or a completed Masters degree in nursing or a related discipline will be considered.


Recent clinical and/or education experience in nursing with a focus on mental health practice.
Commitment to developing expertise in innovative use of digital technologies for course delivery. 
Publication in national and/or international media on aspects of mental health care and practice.
Involvement in research in an area of health is preferred.
