Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Sociology 

School of People, Environment and Planning, College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Sociology is a key social science programme within the School of People, Environment and Planning. We are seeking applicants who have relevant research and teaching expertise in general sociological theory and the sociology of colonisation/decolonisation.

Position overview

Massey University is New Zealand's defining university. Sociology is a key social science programme within the School of People, Environment and Planning, which has a presence on the Manawatu and Albany campuses.

The appointee will possess a relevant doctorate and will have relevant research and teaching expertise in Sociology. In particular, the appointee will have expertise in general sociological theory and the sociology of colonisation/decolonisation. 
The appointee will primarily develop and teach undergraduate students. Teaching will primarily be conducted on the Manawatu campus, and there is an expectation that the successful candidate will contribute to distance teaching.

The successful applicant will primarily contribute to the development of the Sociology programme’s undergraduate offerings, to its research and publication profile, and to collegial relations within the programme and the School more broadly.

Purpose statement

To enhance the learning and qualification outcomes of Massey's students and the scholarly outputs of the University by undertaking an effective programme of teaching; undertaking research including research supervision of students; engaging in the pursuit of external funding; providing administrative and professional service to the University and broader academic or professional communities.

Key accountabilities:
Teaching/Supervision

  1. Undertake undergraduate teaching.
  2. Develop and teach major curriculum components of courses.
  3. Coordinate and administer the teaching of subjects.
  4. Supervise the research activities of graduate and undergraduate students and assist in the supervision of students/research projects at a postgraduate level.
  5. Undertake continuing personal professional development.

Research

  1. Undertake an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme or participate in team-based research.
  2. Publish papers or other scholarly works in academic journals and review papers.
  3. Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences.
  4. Generate research funding.

Service to the Community

  1. Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s Charter and Strategic Plan.
  2. Assist the School to develop an environment which gives effect to the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi.

University Responsibilities

  1. Serve on University and/or School committees.
  2. Ensure the observance of University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices.
  3. Contribute to the development of a School working environment of teamwork and cooperation.
