Massey University Archives is looking for an experienced archivist to fill the role of Assistant Archivist.

Position overview

Massey University Archives is looking for an experienced archivist to fill the role of Assistant Archivist. Knowledge of the university environment and an interest in New Zealand history would be an advantage.

In this role, the successful applicant will be assisting the University Archivist to meet the needs of the Archives and its researchers. You will be working with the University’s institutional and our collecting archive collections.

To be successful in appointment you will have:
• A university degree and a qualification in archives or librarianship
• Knowledge of archives-related technology
• A concern for accuracy and attention to detail
• A strong and proactive approach to customer service

This is a permanent, full-time position, working Monday to Friday.

Job description

Purpose statement

• To assist with the development and maintenance of the University Archives and its 
collections, to help implement the provisions of the University Archives Policy, and to provide 
an information service to enquirers.

Responsible to

• Responsible to the University Archivist.
• Liaises with Library staff, other University staff, Community Archive staff and the public as 
necessary.

Key accountabilities

Archives Operations
Duties and Responsibilities

• Advise the University Archivist, as required, about policies, services and priorities for the 
University Archives. 
• Supervise the staff of the University Archives, as required, in the absence of the University 
Archivist. 
• Work with staff to improve processes and provide a client-centred service of the highest 
quality.

Archiving
Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure that material held as part of the University Archives is archived in accordance with 
accepted archival standards.
• When requested, acquire archival material relevant to the University Archives.
• Appraise the material to identify records of archival value.
• Accession University Archives material, as requested.
• Arrange and describe archival material held in the University Archives.

Archives Storage, Access and Outreach
Duties and Responsibilities

• Use appropriate conservation and storage techniques to protect and preserve items in the 
University Archives.
• Ensure material is easily retrievable through effective labelling and shelving.
• Develop computer records for easy access.
• Identify material for digitisation, as required.
• Contribute University Archives material to Tāmiro, as required, and maintain high levels of 
accuracy of metadata.
• Answer queries related to the University Archives.
• Provide documents to researchers, in accordance with policies on access.
• Promote the usefulness of the University Archives through efficient and effective service.
• Assist with the raising of awareness of the University Archives.

Person specification

Qualifications

• A university degree is required
• A qualification in archives or librarianship is required

Experience

• Experience in archives work is desirable
• A good understanding of the research process and how it relates to archives
• Knowledge of technology relevant to archives is required
