Job Description:

Youth Horizons is looking for a Personal Advisor to help Youth Service West in New Lynn be the best it can be. The Personal Advisor/ Kaitohutohu a Rangitahi is a fulltime role, responsible for supporting at-risk youth aged 16-17 years.

The Role

The Personal Advisor's focus is supporting at-risk youth aged 16-17 to remain engaged in education or training (both mainstream and alternative), and assist in finding employment. Main outcomes include: Gain NCEA levels or equivalent, support to find the best training or work option, career planning and goal setting, becoming work ready, interview skills, employer appreciation, driver licensing and assisted job search.  Key responsibilities include;   

  • Providing information, guidance and support to young people and their families/whānau in order to raise aspirations and assist the young person into work, training or further education opportunities.
  • Developing a pathway plan with the young person that includes goals to improve young person's skills with a focus on increasing employability and enhancing social participation and engagement. 
  • Planning and prioritising intermediary goals, or action steps, to advance the overall progress of the young person.
  • Supporting with applications to further assist/support.
  • Implementing motivational strategies and strength based approaches in order to maintain the young person's engagement with the service and chosen activity.
  • Facilitating young person's access to the range of other services necessary to ensure the best result for the young person, as they move towards independence.

About You

  • Proven experience achieving positive outcomes working with youth, family/whanau.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with peers and stakeholders.
  • Strong administrative experience with an eye for detail.
  • Exposure to using motivational and strength based approaches and strategies with youth.
  • Knowledge of community resources and how to access information and resources relating to education, employment, housing and health services.
  • Commitment to practicing bi-culturalism in everyday situations.
  • Full and clean New Zealand drivers licence.
