Position overview

Massey University’s new Centre for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE) is looking for a research assistant in the area of Māori health. The appointment is for a three years’ fixed term period at 0.8 FTE (30 hours per week), and will be accompanied by enrolment into the PhD program in the School of Communication, Journalism, and Marketing at Massey University.

You will mostly participate in field-based culture-centred projects, conducting literature reviews, interviewing community members, designing and running communication advocacy interventions, liaising with community partners and building community relationships, as well as conducting evaluations through the use of participatory quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Other skills include the ability to carrying out social change campaigns among the Maori. Proficiency in Te Reo will be an added plus point.

The Center for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE) is a project-driven center that utilises ethnographic, community-based, culturally grounded participatory action research methods in carrying out culturally-centered social change interventions in marginalized populations across the globe.

As an ideal candidate, you will be familiar with Kaupapa Maori research and evaluation, and have experience conducting field-based participatory research in carrying out projects among Maori communities. Training will be provided on the use of the facilities in the university as well as on fieldwork methodologies of the culture-centered approach.

As a successful candidate, you must meet all the requirements of a supervised Junior Research Officer and undertake and maintain PhD studies at Massey University in Maori health, health communication, social justice communication, activism, communication for social change. Continuation of the second and third year of this agreement will be dependent on satisfactory progress towards the PhD.

Job description

Purpose statement

To carry out research projects within the Centre for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE), in conjunction with PhD study in social justice communication, activism, communication for social change.

Responsible to

Associate Head of School

Key accountabilities

Satisfactorily perform supervised research and related duties in support of CARE projects as required by the Associate Head of School; and enrol in and satisfactorily undertake study toward a PhD qualification

Undertake research as appropriate e.g. by:
• Working with a project team to produce the highest quality research
• Conducting literature searches
• Conducting fieldwork on projects
• Analysing data from field work
• Writing literature reviews and research reports
• Maintaining the central database of articles and reports (using NVivo).
• Providing administrative and overall project support as required by project leader
• Preparing, drafting and writing papers for publications

Disseminating research
Answer e-mail or phone enquiries about the work of the Project and copy articles for posting if appropriate.

Other
• Provide support to the project leader as required.
• Undertake other duties as required.

Person specification

Qualifications

MA and a requirement to study towards a PhD in social justice communication, activism, communication for social change.

Experience

• Have training in qualitative research methods.
• Have experience working with civil society organizations, community partnerships, or activist networks.
• Have a track record of carrying out social change communication interventions.
• Have a track record of publications and conference presentations, and be able to evidence a promising research trajectory.
