Position overview

We have a full-time, 12 months fixed-term contract for you to be part of our Financial Service team, based in Palmerston North. In this role, you will provide robust analysis and advice to Colleges and Service Lines on financial performance and monitoring, assist with budgeting, forecasting and management/council reporting.

Purpose statement

To assist financial and management accounting services to provide robust analysis and advice to Colleges and Service Lines on financial performance and monitoring, assist with budgeting, forecasting and management/council reporting.

Financial Services Manager

Key accountabilities

Financial and Management Accounting Services:
□ To provide financial and management accounting advice to the University. This includes support for budget development, analysis of variances and recommendations to “manage” variances as required.
□ To monitor the financial performance of the Colleges and service lines and prepare variance analysis for management review.
□ Assist with the extraction and interpretation of financial data to satisfy external and internal requests.
□ Assist with review of the business cases and provide financial advice to the semi-autonomous business units of the University.

□ Actively assist with the budgeting process of the University and group.
□ Manage the budget packs including the uploading of staff and student fee data to ensure that budgeting process is complete within the set deadline.
□ Provide budget pack training and support to the budget centre managers and budget holders.
□ Review the budget packs, seek explanations from the business and provide feedback to FS Manager

Management Reporting:
□ Assist with review of month end results
□ Assist with investigating variances in reporting lines from approved budgets
□ Prepare draft commentary for the senior management and the council/council committees
□ Prepare draft papers for the senior management and the council/council committees as may be required by FS Manager


□ Oversights benchmarking, as required, and prepare analysis of benchmarking result
□ Provide or review of financial data for ranking and alike activities
□ Attend board and working group meetings as required.
□ Provide costing services as required.
□ Other duties as required by the FS Manager.

Person specification


A tertiary qualification in accounting and/or finance is essential for this position. Membership of a recognised accounting body is also essential.


At least five years’ experience at a senior level in financial and management accounting in a tertiary education provider is essential

Additional Pre-employment Checks

Requirement to pass a Criminal and Traffic Convictions (Security) Check performed by the Ministry of Justice.

Requirement to pass a Credit History Check performed by Veda Advantage Personal Information Services. In addition, there is a requirement to pass a ‘No Asset Procedure (NAP)’ Credit History Check performed through the Insolvency and Trustee Service, Ministry of Economic Development.
