Job Description:

 

PURPOSE
  • Be able to cut sew and upholster furniture from start to finish
  • Work without patterns if necessary for custom pieces
  • To ensure each piece of furniture is manufactured in accordance to standards.
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Draw cutting lines on material following patterns, templates, sketches, or blueprints, using chalk, pencils, paint, or other methods.
  • Measure and cut new covering materials, using patterns and measuring and cutting instruments, following sketches and design specifications.
  • Sew fabrics for initial development pieces
  • Upholster and finish furniture items
  • Work in all areas of the upholstery shop to assist with back loads and pressure orders
 
Secondary
  • Fit, install and secure material on frames, using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, and/or staples.
  • Read work orders, and apply knowledge and experience with materials in order to determine types and amounts of materials required to cover pieces.
  • Build furniture up with loose fibre stuffing, cotton, felt, and/or foam padding to form smooth rounded surfaces.
  • Examine furniture frames, upholstery, springs, and webbing to locate defects.
  • Make, restore, and/or create custom upholstered furniture, using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods.
  • Maintain records of time required to perform each job.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment for upholstering.
  • Ability to make upholstery and other repairs to furniture.
  • Ability to understand and work from general instructions.
