Category Manager - Juicy 6 month contract for Top Talent

Based in South Auckland, my client is a strongly branded, well recognised company and a significant player in the office products industry in New Zealand.

On their behalf, we are seeking search for an experienced Category Management Specialist, to work on a very exciting Category Management project which will use all your Planning, Analytical, Negotiation and Category Management skills.

This is a juicy 6+ month project where you will be working to build two exciting categories and bring them to the market.

You won’t be starting from scratch. Both categories have been marketed previously, but this is an amazing opportunity to give them a complete review, rationalize the product ranges in terms of selection, marketing pricing, suppliers, stragtegy and planning to create new product ranges that will maximise the opportunity for optimum category growth.

Working with all departments of the business you will spend time analyzing historical category data in all aspects including financial performance, gathering feedback and insights from customers who used the previous range, analyzing data form competitors, reviewing with the sales and marketing teams on the future range, introducing new products and clearing old products and  working to build two great categories that will meet the demands of the market.

This is a great opportunity for the business to bring fresh ideas to scope out these newly created categories and an amazing project for a talented Category Manager to be involved in.

The Role in a bit more detail

  • Analysis financial performance of previous ranges, understanding sales and margin, at an SKU level in Category order. 
  •  Review which major customers used the products and understand why. 
  • Review with the sales and marketing teams as well as key customers
  • Understand the financial gains / losses in selling OB over B including impact on rebates. 
  • Determine what the categories should mean to customers
  • Gain agreement on a Statement of Purpose
  • Take these findings and work with Sales and Merch Teams to agree opportunities  
  • Work with Vendors to discover range and pricing 
  • Agree product range 
  • Add products to SAP, gathering images, writing descriptions 
  • Agree packaging design concepts and sign off 
  • Create launch program internal/external 

About you:

  • Category management experience with the tenacity to drive product range development, positioning and direction
  • Incredibly analytical. Must have an analytical brain and an expert in mining and interpreting data.
  • Strong skills in research and presentation of recommendations
  • Demonstrated success in the development and execution of sales and marketing programmes ideally gained from a Retail, FMCG, or Grocery sector
  • A high level of commercial acumen and focused on driving and achieving results
  •  Excellent stakeholder management skills underpinned with strong influencing and decision-making skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong customer focus and an understanding of customer needs
  • Motivated self-started that can work independently with strong attention to details,
  • Competent MS Office skills, particularly advanced Excel and exposure to SAP would be advantageous
  • Relevant degree qualifications in a business or marketing related discipline preferred
