SENIOR CATEGORY MANAGER - Packaging and Sustainability

Our client is one of the largest listed companies, with diverse business operations that cover home improvement, office supplies, engineering supplies, industrial and safety products to name just a few categories. As market leaders and boasting more than 30 branches nationwide, they aim to ensure that New Zealand businesses benefit from their vast product range and long history of serving a wide range of industries.

On their behalf, we are seeking search for an experienced Category Manager, to join the wider Category Management team and be responsible for overseeing the Packaging Category, which will include all sourcing and supply agreements, product selection, inventory and pricing processes.

The Category Manager works closely with internal stakeholders and suppliers across the entire business and enjoys the support of other talented Category Managers and very experienced and knowledgeable Category Assistant.

The Packaging Category is an exciting category which continues to grow and diversify. These days packaging is frequently scruntinized as the measure of a company's overall sustainability, and will continue to evolve to meet the functional, economic and environmentally acceptable needs of customers.

We are looking for the new Category Manager to take a lead role in the business and champion sustainability across all categories nationally.

The Role will involve:

Category planning

  • Analyze and review category segments based on sales team feedback, customer, supplier and market information
  • Establish category targets for qualitative and quantitative measures
  • Develop the marketing, product supply, ranging, supplier and service strategies for the category
  • Determine the pricing and product supply tactics to achieve business goals
  • Develop and implement a written category plan for the business
  • Conduct regular category reviews that measure and monitor category performance
  • Develop and maintain pricing strategies that maximize the opportunity for category growth through research on market pricing
  • Product Range Selection
  • Optimise product range within categories to meet market demand and minimise stock levels
  • Introduce new products and clear old products to minimise inventory
  • Review and rationalise product ranges and suppliers
  • Utilise market research to anticipate competition and market trends
  •  Track ongoing market performance of the category
  • Assess and implement new market opportunities 
  • Presenting and sharing insights with the sale team and gaining their feedback and ideas


  • Review/analyse current ranges and ensure products are competitive and commercially sound
  •  Develop a preferred supplier strategy to maximise Return On Investment
  • Development of appropriate procurement strategies, manage and review suppliers
  •  Participate in negotiations with suppliers and implementation of new agreements
  • Monitor supplier spend patterns and performance

Inventory Management

  • Optimise stock levels across branches
  • Ensure critical products are always in stock
  • Co-ordinate, alongside the Category Buyers, the stock management of products being introduced and removed


  • Coordinate and align the category strategy with the marketing plan for each channel
  • Develop appropriate promotional campaigns
  • Attend industry trade shows and work with suppliers around new to market products
  • Communicate channel strategies and promotional programs

About You

  • A strong in/ experience in the Packaging Sector
  • A sustainability advocate
  • Category Management experience with the tenacity to drive product range development, positioning and direction
  • Strong skills in research and presentation of recommendations
  • Demonstrated success in the development and execution of sales and marketing programmes ideally gained from a large Retail, FMCG, or Grocery sector
  • A high level of commercial acumen and focused on driving and achieving results
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills underpinned with strong influencing and decision-making skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong customer focus and an understanding of customer needs
  • Motivated self-started that can work independently with strong attention to detail
  • Competent MS Office skills, particularly Excel and exposure to complex ERP would be advantageous
  • Relevant degree qualifications in a business or marketing related discipline preferred ( not essential)
