Job Description:

We are currently seeking an Assistant Maître D to join the service/restaurant team at Helena Bay Lodge, a seasonal luxury lodge, located in Northland, New Zealand. The restaurant at Helena Bay Lodge is a consultancy of Don Alfonso 1890, a two Michelin star restaurant in Southern Italy. This position is well-suited to serious hospitality candidates who enjoy providing an exceptional standard of service in a fine dining environment.

This is a full time, permanent position which requires flexibility and commitment. The roster includes morning, afternoon and evening shifts over 7 days.  Candidates must be able to commit to working the full summer season through till the end of May 2020 as a minimum. Flexible start date possible for the right candidate.

Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will:

  • Have fine dining experience, preferably silver service trained or knowledgeable
  • Have a good working knowledge of wine, spirits and cocktails. Comprehensive international wine knowledge is preferable, as well as the ability to match wine with food.
  • Be computer savvy with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes, in particular Excel.
  • Be highly organised with the ability to lead a team, communicate efficiently and clearly, and think well under pressure, always maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Have 5 star restaurant and/or hotel experience. A yachting background will be highly favoured.
  • Have a good command of verbal and written English
  • Have an eye for detail and exceptional presentation skills.

Job duties include:

  • Responsible for guest service, and in the absence of HOD in your department, supervising all other service staff.
  • Assisting with management of all stock and supplies, coordinating stocktake and maintaining inventories.
  • Leading the service of breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as any other required guest food and beverage services.
  • Overseeing set up and close down of meal services including correct docketing and handover to next shift.
  • Responsible for ensuring the dining wing is tidy and presentable at all times.
  • Proactively dealing with all guests requests, preferences and complaints
  • Assisting with maintaining a healthy and safe work environment, and possibly acting as Health and Safety Representative for the department
  • Assisting with training new staff members and implementing new procedures.
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Maitre D and/or Interior Manager.

In order to be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand, for the entirety of the season (until 31st May 2020)
  • Have a FULL New Zealand drivers licence and a reliable car to transport yourself to and from work
  • Be able to work all days and shifts, in a full-time capacity
