Job Description:

Web Designer / Front-end Developer

Our client is a leading New Zealand-based Website Design, Development and Digital Marketing agency offering effective solutions to clients both locally and globally. They’re on the hunt for an amazing client-facing Web Designer/Front End Developer to join their team of professional digital specialists.

Our client's core purpose is to create websites that make a real difference to their clients’ businesses. You’ll work on everything from striking brochure sites to full blown e-Commerce solutions and online business applications across a wide range of industries. You’ll be responsible for driving platform research and experimentation, concept exploration, and ideation within the creative process.

Your new role

You’ll need to know the complete web design process from design conception to site structure and interaction flows, wireframing and the creation of beautiful visual elements for websites including layout, colour, typography and iconography. They are looking for a creative that can design and build on the fly. One who can interact collaboratively and iteratively with clients and colleagues throughout the process to deliver a completed project.

Essential knowledge you’ll bring to the role:

  • Must be enthusiastic about (and currently) designing and creating websites using relevant real-time design and prototyping platforms and tools (such as UXPin, Sketch, InVision, etc).
  • You’ll have a belief in creating design systems prior to starting your design build to help you take a holistic approach to the project.
  • Proven WordPress experience including building websites using page builders like Visual Composer, Elementor, etc.
  • A strong appreciation of mobile-first design and responsive web design techniques.
  • Understanding of the ‘grid’ design system, its importance to developer/designer workflows, and the CSS frameworks that can be employed to utilise it.
  • The ability to recognise the importance of close ties with the development team, and to consciously work WITH them on projects rather than in a traditional waterfall process.
  • Strong quality control skills across different browsers and devices.
  • Be comfortable with utilising software for working and collaborating remotely with clients and colleagues.
  • A deep understanding of user-centred design.
  • Experience presenting designs/wireframes to clients, helping them to understand the thought process behind your choices and why you believe they best support the client’s specific objectives. You’ll have spade-loads of the communication skills required to tell this part of the story.

‘Nice to haves’ you may garnish the role with:

  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS3 + animation, and JavaScript libraries
  • An understanding of designing for conversion
  • An understanding of, or experience in persona development for web design

You will definitely have:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a commercial environment
  • An impressive portfolio of work
  • The ability to multi-task and juggle various projects at once and at a fast pace
  • An absolute eagle eye for detail
  • Strong personal organisation and be able to manage your own timelines independently
  • A thirst for current visual and interaction design technology trends and practices in a modern web technology, together with a willingness to push the envelope with your implementation of these.
  • Experience of working cohesively in a tight team environment – team fit is crucial to us and we want everyone to be happy in their work, including you.

And finally, you must absolutely have a passion for digital and relish the idea of continually self-educating, up-skilling and keeping current. In a nutshell – only people who live and breathe the web need apply!

You will be required to complete a small project as part of the recruitment process to test your skills and knowledge.

What you’ll get back

In return for your energy, enthusiasm and commitment to being the best in front end design, we offer a competitive salary and the opportunity to work with a good, honest, clever and driven team who strive to impress their customers with market-leading solutions.  You’ll be autonomous in your work, and your opinion and thoughts will really count.

Your new office

This is a full-time position based in our client's office in the heart of Christchurch Central. You’ll get to work in an industry you’re passionate about, against an urban backdrop that’s sure to help keep your creativity flowing.

Your new office is a wonderfully restored 1883 heritage building. It’s located on High Street and is in close proximity to the meandering Avon River.

The contemporary workspace features modern décor and large round-top Victorian windows, welcoming healthy beams of natural light. At your disposal will be a modern kitchen you’d be proud to have in your own house, a chill-out lounge equipped with smart TV, and snazzy mac/PC-ready meeting rooms for you to present your work to clients in.

You’ll be surrounded by a plethora of cafes, bars and restaurants — perfect for lunching and meeting friends and family for after-work wind-downs.
