The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori is a critical strategic leadership role in the University, reporting to the Vice-Chancellor (Chief Executive), as part of the Senior Leadership Team. The University has a suite of focused initiatives to deliver on our aspirations to be a truly Te Tiriti o Waitangi-led University, which this role leads in partnership with colleges and services.

Massey University strives to be a leader in Māori education and research. As the first university to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Māori Visual arts we are the only institution that offers Te Aho Tātairangi, a Māori undergraduate immersion teaching programme in partnership with Te Rūnanga nui o ngā Kura Kaupapa o Aotearoa. We are emerging as the foremost institution for the Postgraduate Diploma in Māori Medium Teaching and Learning Te Aho Paerewa. Massey University also ensures the future of Māori development through its leadership in areas such as Māori Business, Māori Science and Māori Health while supporting Māori academic success through Te Rau Puawai Māori health workforce development programme. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori role is to –
• provide strategic leadership to the University in connecting with key Māori stakeholders, including iwi partners, Māori Inc. and Māori educational providers amongst others.
• Support the growth and development of staff capacity and capability in our colleges and services to be culturally responsive and to reflect Māori presence in our staffing profile.
• shape research endeavour relevant to Māori.
• grow the representation of Māori in our student profile, and to support their academic success.
• lead and manage a specialist team providing expert advice to University managers and staff and the Senior Leadership team on te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
The successful appointee should bring a distinct area of expertise and relevance to the University and should demonstrate the following attributes:
• An acknowledged and respected academic with a PhD level qualification preferable, able to command respect with the academic community.
• An acknowledged Māori leader, who has respect across iwi and who is engaged within her/his communities.
• An accomplished and credible organisational leader and manager who is strategically focused, and financially astute.
• A skillful people manager, collegial in approach and has a natural inclination to mana-enhancing relationships.
• Good networks with Mäori, including Mäori businesses, Rūnanga, and Iwi organisations.
• Excellent competency in te reo Māori in a range of settings.
• Competent and confident in tikanga Māori in a range of settings.
• Familiar with the funding systems for research and education within Aotearoa, and able to see and capitalise on opportunities.
• An advanced understanding of and demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the advancement of Māori development.

A PhD will support credibility with the University community and a degree in a relevant subject coupled with significant leadership experience in a sector relevant to the University will also be considered.
• Fluent in Te Reo.
• Demonstrates deep knowledge and understanding of Te Titiri o Waitangi.
• Engagement with Iwi, Hapu and Whanau in settings requiring high levels of proficiency in Tikanga and Te Reo communities.
