Position overview

Wharerata Function Centre and Cafe is a premier hospitality in the Manawatu.To satisfy the Monday to Friday cafe and the on campus delivery service, a highly skilled and innovative Catering Assistant is required to manage the sandwich and cold corner of this busy kitchen.

An experienced individual is sought who has the flair, the organisational skills and has a passion for excelling in customer service.

Job description

Purpose statement

Manages and delivers the production of quality sandwich and other cold items specified on the daily production sheet for use within the Café, for delivery across the campus and for specific in house hospitality events.

In cooperation with the Head and Executive Chef contributes to the introduction of new items that show variation and flair within the menus offered by Wharerata,

Key accountabilities

  1. Food Preparation: - Is responsible for the daily production of quality food items for retail sale, function catering and VIP hospitality that includes sandwiches (various kinds and fillings), rolls, paninis and other cold items. This includes the use of a range of Artisan breads and bakery items.
    • High quality preparation and packaging of items for the front of house sale from the café cabinets, as well as satellite outlets. 
    • Traying of produced items so that their presentation adds quality to a catering delivery off or on site.
    • Making and presenting sandwich & roll varieties and cold food items in a hygienic and professional manner.
    • Preparing fillings for night and weekend functions and where possible the following days deliveries.
    • Ordering bread / bread varieties as required so that adequate stocks are available for the specific run sheets. 
    • Collating orders on a timely basis so that they can be uplifted and delivered on time. (15 minutes in advance as a minimum)
    • Contributing to the innovation and variety of produce for the food cabinet and special orders by recommending and trailing new items for sale, and by adding new recipes to the master recipes list.

  2. Front of House:
    Liaise with the other Front of House staff for in house function requirements.
    Provide the required service delivery according to the demands of the daily run sheet and the level of business experienced within the Café.

  3. Clearing and Cleaning: - Helps to maintain a clean and tidy operation by: 
    • Assisting in the clearing of dishes and maintaining a tidy workplace.
    • Carrying out cleaning of the work areas, chillers, display cabinets and utensils on a daily basis to the schedule set by the Executive Chef 
    • The regular removal of rubbish and the mopping of floors.

  4. General Support Functions: - Undertakes other support duties as may be required including:
    • Liaise with the Van/delivery person to ensure orders are complete, correctly labeled and ready 15 minutes prior to run sheet requirements. This may well include advising other members of the kitchen brigade of their specific productions on the daily run sheet.
    • Goods receipt – checking and signing for various deliveries as required
    • Storing goods correctly, ensuring that they are labeled and dated according to the Executive Chef’s schedule.
    • Accurate stocktaking as directed

  5. Team membership - be a proactive member of the kitchen brigade and the whole Wharerata staff including management, front of house and casual staff. Demonstrate a positive personality that adds a positive contribution to the workplace.
    Volunteer to assist in any area where pressure points might appear.

  6. Personal presentation –Demonstrate a consistently high standard of personal presentation and personal hygiene, maintaining uniforms to a specified standard.

Food Handling / Hygiene certifacte an advantage


At least 2 years experience in a similar position.
